A useful answer on a personal phone can feel different when it is spoken into a car carrying other people. Before a journey, ask which account is connected, which information it can use and who is listening.

On October 20, Google announced Personal Intelligence’s staged Android Auto rollout, with Google built-in planned for the coming months. Existing Gemini-app opt-ins carry into the car. People who have never enabled Personal Intelligence are not automatically enrolled.

The Breakdown

Android Auto connects an Android phone to a compatible vehicle. Google built-in runs Google services within the car. For Gemini on Android Auto, Google specifies Android 11 or later, at least 2GB of RAM, a compatible car and Gemini selected as the phone’s assistant.

The new personalisation layer can use information from connected apps to tailor an answer. That is separate from simply having a conversational assistant. Google says ordinary navigation, music, calls and questions remain available without Personal Intelligence.

What Indian users can establish

Google introduced Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app in India on April 14, initially for eligible paid subscribers, with free access planned later.

India is within the announced geographic scope: Google excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria. The staged rollout is not confirmation that every eligible Indian account already has access.

Current core eligibility requires users to be 18 or older, use a personal account rather than a work, school or supervised account, and enable Keep Activity. It does not list a paid subscription as a core condition. That should not be read as a guarantee that every feature or account is enabled.

Android Auto lists India among its supported countries. Gemini’s mobile documentation lists English, Hindi and several other Indian languages, but the car announcement supplies no separate language-by-language schedule for Personal Intelligence. Phone language support does not establish feature-by-feature availability.

Check the connections before the journey

App groups include Workspace, such as Gmail and Calendar; Search services, including Maps; YouTube; and eligible Google Photos accounts. In Gemini, Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps is the place to review these connections. Search personalisation requires Web & App Activity; YouTube needs YouTube History; Workspace needs Smart features in other Google products.

Connecting Google Photos requires its app, Face Groups, selecting your own face group, and Estimate missing locations. India is on the supported-country list. These are choices to review, not settings every driver must enable.

Google says personal responses in cars with Google built-in will require the user’s presence and connected phone. That does not make spoken answers private from fellow passengers. Deciding what to ask aloud remains a separate judgement.

Connecting, remembering and training are separate questions

Google says it does not train models directly on a user’s Gmail inbox or on imagery or audio from their Photos library. Relevant summaries, excerpts, generated media and inferences, alongside prompts and responses, can be used for training when Keep Activity is on. A summary can be an entire short or especially relevant email or file. Google describes privacy measures, but some processed data also receives human review.

Disconnecting an app does not erase information already saved in Gemini Apps Activity. Deleting that activity is a separate control, and data already shared with other services follows those services’ policies. Treating one switch as a complete deletion instruction would miss that distinction.

For Indian buyers comparing connected-car features, compatibility, account eligibility and understandable controls deserve as much attention as the list of voice commands. A feature label is a starting point for that comparison, not a substitute for it.

Review setup while safely parked, before travelling. Google also warns that Gemini can give incorrect answers and should not be relied on for safety-critical information while operating a vehicle.

The Crunch

Before using a personal assistant in a shared space, check the account, the connected apps and the audience. Convenience is easier to judge when those boundaries are clear.
