Agnipath adds a two-year route to regular military service

2 minutes

Agniveers outside the first selection for regular service can choose another two years. The new route offers higher pay, while longer military careers still depend on willingness and selection standards.

Original editorial diagram of Agnipath's two routes after four years: 25% selected for regular service on merit, while the remaining 75% can choose another two years as Agniveers. Regular enrolment afterward remains subject to willingness and selection criteria.

The first Agnipath recruits are approaching the end of their four-year terms. The government has added another route through which those who want to stay can build a longer military career.

Chief of Defence Staff General N. S. Raja Subramani announced the change on November 4, 2026. It gives Agniveers outside the initial selection for regular service an additional two-year engagement, followed by a route into the regular forces if they wish to continue and meet the required standards.

The Breakdown

Agnipath was approved on June 14, 2022, with an initial four-year engagement. Its original terms allowed up to 25% of each batch to enter the regular cadre, based on performance, organisational requirements and service rules.

That selection route remains. The Cabinet has now approved another two years for the remaining 75% who choose to continue. After this second engagement, willing Agniveers who satisfy the selection criteria will be offered regular enrolment.

The scheme will continue. The new arrangement is described as a broader change to Agnipath, although the first batch is approaching the point at which the additional option becomes immediately relevant.

What changes in the pay package

The second engagement comes with higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits.

The monthly package will be ₹43,500 in the fifth year and ₹47,500 in the sixth. Those figures describe the package and should not be assumed to be the amount received in hand.

For comparison, the original four-year schedule rose from ₹30,000 a month in the first year to ₹40,000 in the fourth, with deductions towards the Seva Nidhi corpus and applicable allowances treated separately.

Why This Matters

For recruits and their families, the change extends the period available to pursue a military career. It also makes the standards for regular enrolment an important part of planning: an opportunity to continue is valuable only when people understand the conditions attached to it.

For the services, retaining trained personnel can preserve experience that would otherwise leave with a departing cohort. The government says its decision followed performance assessments and feedback from the forces. How the revised arrangement affects staffing and experience will become clearer as it is implemented.

The useful next measures are practical ones: how many Agniveers accept the second engagement, how selection standards are communicated, and how many subsequently enter the regular cadre. Those numbers will show how the revised route works beyond the announcement.

The Crunch

The change gives more Agniveers time and a route towards a longer career. Choosing an additional engagement and qualifying for regular service are distinct steps. Both matter to what the new arrangement delivers.
