India’s economy just received another vote of confidence. Fitch Ratings on Wednesday lifted its GDP growth forecast for FY26 to 6.9 percent, up from 6.5 percent projected earlier. The upgrade follows a sharp pickup in economic momentum during the June quarter, when growth surged to 7.8 percent year-on-year, supported by robust consumption and strong domestic demand.

The Upgrade
Fitch’s September Global Economic Outlook notes that India’s first-quarter performance exceeded expectations. Real GDP growth increased from 7.4 percent in January to March to 7.8 percent in April to June, compared with the earlier forecast of 6.7 percent.
What is Driving Growth
Domestic demand continues to be the key driver, with household consumption and investment providing resilience against global uncertainty. Infrastructure spending and a strong services sector are adding to the momentum, while easing inflation has also helped sustain activity.
The Global Context
At a time when major economies are struggling with slower recoveries, India’s growth trajectory is standing out. Fitch views this resilience as an indicator of sustained medium-term expansion, even though risks from tariffs and geopolitics remain.
The Bigger Picture
The upgrade underlines India’s position as one of the fastest-growing large economies. Policymakers gain further credibility for domestic reforms and fiscal management, while investors are reminded that the country’s growth story is increasingly powered by its own demand engine.
