IPL valuations: the business behind the billion-dollar teams

2 minutes

A cricket result and a business valuation answer different questions. Understanding the asset, the income and the assumptions makes the numbers more useful.

An IPL team can lose a match without losing access to its most important revenue stream. That distinction helps explain why a franchise valuation is not a league table of cricketing success.

Sportico’s inaugural IPL valuation study, published in late October, estimates the average franchise’s enterprise value at $1.7 billion. Its methodology combines team revenue and league distributions with a team-specific multiplier. These are estimates of business value, not guaranteed sale prices.

The Breakdown

The income structure matters. Sportico estimates that central distributions from the BCCI account for roughly three quarters of average franchise revenue.

A concrete historical example comes from Delhi Capitals’ operating company, JSW GMR Cricket. CARE Ratings’ January 2025 assessment recorded about ₹548 crore of central-rights receipts in FY24. It described a distribution arrangement in which 90% of the pool available to teams was shared evenly and 10% depended on performance.

That example is dated evidence of the business model, not a fresh disclosure of Delhi Capitals’ 2026 finances. It shows why a poor sporting season need not remove the underlying commercial foundation.

Why This Matters

There is another distinction worth keeping clear: what exactly is being valued?

Houlihan Lokey’s July 2026 study put the IPL’s business value at $20.6 billion and its separate brand value at $4.3 billion. Neither is the same measure as Sportico’s estimate for an individual franchise.

Comparing different valuation objects as though they were successive readings of one asset can manufacture a rise or fall that neither study establishes. Nor should a brand-value estimate simply be added to a business valuation without checking what the latter already includes.

For Indian sponsors, a team’s estimated sale value is also not a measure of campaign effectiveness. The commercial question remains which audience a sponsorship reaches, what rights it includes and what outcomes the brand can reasonably measure.

The Big Picture

Shared income offers a foundation, but it also makes league-level commercial decisions important to individual owners. A valuation must look beyond this season’s trophy towards the durability of future cash flows, costs and the assumptions used to convert them into a present value.

The Crunch

The useful question is not just which IPL team is worth the most. It is which cash flows support that estimate, how they are shared, and what would have to change for the valuation to change.
