UPI can now be part of planning an overseas visit before the traveller leaves India. An October 30 Finance Ministry update highlighted online bookings for At the Top, Burj Khalifa, and Resorts World Sentosa. The underlying partnerships were announced in July and September, rather than launched this week.
The Breakdown
The Singapore example shows how this works. FOMO Pay’s September 9 announcement says Indian visitors can use their UPI apps for participating experiences on the Resorts World Sentosa website. Customers pay in rupees while the merchant receives settlement in Singapore dollars.
That separates two decisions a travel business must make: which payment method the customer sees and which currency the business receives. A familiar payment interface can be offered without making the overseas merchant operate entirely in the customer’s currency.
Why This Matters
It also brings the payment choice into advance booking. An attraction can offer an Indian customer a familiar option when they are comparing dates and deciding what to include in a trip, rather than waiting until they arrive at a ticket counter.
For travellers, the practical check remains the actual booking page: the payment options offered, the final rupee amount and the booking’s cancellation terms. The availability of a familiar app does not by itself establish the cheapest total price.
The Big Picture
Acceptance at these booking sites does not establish UPI availability at other merchants.
For a tourism business, accepting a payment method and demonstrating its commercial value are separate steps. To assess the latter, it would need evidence about completed bookings, customer problems and the costs of processing them. The announcements do not provide that performance assessment.
The Crunch
For tourism businesses serving Indian visitors, localisation can begin at checkout, before the journey starts. The useful test is whether that payment option helps customers complete suitable bookings.
