October’s car sales, company by company

2 minutes

Exports, electric vehicles and domestic SUVs sit inside different October sales totals. Here is how to read the latest company updates together.

Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles both reported higher sales in October, while Kia reported a monthly wholesale record and Mahindra's domestic SUV volumes edged above last October's level. Together, the updates show growth across several manufacturers, with different contributions from vehicle types and overseas markets.

The Breakdown

Maruti reported 2,76,120 vehicles sold in October 2026, up 25% year on year and its highest monthly total. Its domestic figure was 2,16,789, including passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles. Supplies to other manufacturers were 9,459, while exports were 49,872.

Those three components add up to the headline total. Exports represented about 18% of it, so the record cannot be read simply as the number of Maruti vehicles bought by Indian households.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported 75,426 units, up 23% from October last year. Electric-vehicle sales grew 75%. The electric vehicles sit within the passenger-vehicle business: the two growth rates describe different parts of the same update, rather than separate volumes that should be added together.

The EV percentage shows faster growth than the overall company figure. Without the corresponding absolute EV volume, however, it cannot establish how large the electric share became.

SUVs and another monthly record

Mahindra's domestic SUV sales reached 73,338, compared with 71,624 a year earlier. That is an increase of 1,714 vehicles, or about 2.4%. The absolute total and the growth rate tell different parts of the story: a high monthly volume can coexist with a modest year-on-year increase.

Kia reported October wholesales of 33,462 units, up 13.22%, and described the month as a record. These are shipments into the sales channel, rather than a count of completed registrations by buyers.

The figures are deliberately not added into an industry total. Maruti's headline includes exports and light commercial vehicles; Mahindra's number here is domestic SUVs. Placing those totals in one league table would obscure what each measures.

Why This Matters

For businesses supplying these manufacturers, the useful follow-through is specific: which models and markets are contributing to orders? A factory serving exports and a dealership selling to local customers need different information from the same monthly release.

For readers following electric vehicles, Tata's growth rate is worth noting alongside the size of the wider passenger-vehicle business. A faster-growing part of a company need not yet be its largest part.

Our earlier explainer on India’s festive auto market examines registration windows and the distinction between factory shipments and sales to buyers. This update adds the October company figures without treating them as a new retail-market survey.

The Crunch

Several manufacturers finished October with higher reported volumes. The useful comparison is within each company's consistently defined measure, then between the markets and vehicle types contributing to it. The headline records deserve attention; the components explain what those records contain.
