An AI handoff can be a billable outcome

Paying an AI agent for an outcome sounds closer to buying a finished service than renting software. The useful detail is where the supplier draws the finish line.

Original analytical framework for evaluating an AI-assisted service: compare the invoice event, the work remaining for the next team and the customer’s eventual result. The panels are questions for a buyer, not statements of Fin prices, billing definitions, performance or product usage rules.

Paying an AI agent for an outcome sounds closer to buying a finished service than renting software. The useful detail is where the supplier draws the finish line.

Fin's published product definitions illustrate the distinction. For an Indian business assessing automation, a paid handoff raises two questions: what was completed, and what remains?

The Breakdown

Intercom's documentation, checked on October 30, 2026, lists US$0.99 for a service resolution or successful Procedure handoff over chat and email with Intercom, with at most one outcome charge per conversation.

A Procedure handoff completes configured work before passing the conversation to a person or workflow. Such handoffs are billable; default or workspace-level escalations are not. These are published definitions, not an invoice audit.

Resolution means the customer accepts an answer or leaves without requesting more help. Silence after a clarifying question does not qualify. A return to the same conversation seeking further assistance reverses the resolution charge.

What the business still needs to measure

These definitions make a service review more useful when it separates three records: the event that generated a charge, the work passed to the next team, and the customer's eventual result.

A handoff could be valuable because the AI has completed an agreed preparation step. It could still leave substantial work for a specialist. The appropriate comparison is therefore the cost and quality of the whole service, including what happens after the paid event.

Budget controls also have operational consequences. Intercom's usage guide distinguishes an alert, which only notifies, from a hard limit that pauses Fin in the affected workspace. New conversations follow the configured handover steps; existing ones do so at the customer's next interaction. Changing conversation states can move the stopping point slightly earlier or later than the chosen count. The limit does not reduce any contracted minimum charge. The business still needs a workable customer fallback.

For Intercom plans, the public pricing page separately identifies teammate seats and usage charges. An outcome price alone does not describe the complete support budget.

The Crunch

Before comparing AI service quotes, identify the event being bought and who handles the next step. A sensible outcome measure should help the business understand both its invoice and the service the customer actually receives.
